Product Description

These glorious pom-pom like double headed flowers hold striking deep blue, almost purple coloured petals that are a stunning introduction to any garden. The dense spiky petals are held like an eagles claw hence the name, Aquilegia, (Aquila is eagle in Latin). Flowering from June to July, these unusual hardy perennials are ideal border plants, held on upright, leafy stems above a base of glaucous bushy foliage. Try planting with Echinacea Evening Glow, its bright yellow flowers will compliment and contrast the dusky purple of Barlow Blue. Height 45cm. Flowers June to July. Supplied as UK-grown 5cm module plants.

Planting Notes

Planting Plant in prepared soil, with a hole large enough to firmly hold the module.
Soil Type Fertile, moist but well drained.

Growing at a glance…

Ideally, plant your aquilegia in spring. This gives the plants time to establish before growing. Position somewhere sunny or semi-shaded. Plant in spring, digging a generous hole to house the module, adding some grit to the bottom of the hole to aid drainage. Add the module to the hole and fill the edges with soil, firming it down so it's nice and snug. Water well once planted - although, when they've established, they shouldn't need regular watering (except in a prolonged drought). Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant nice and neat.
