Jeff Turner – Born to Garden

Jeff Turner comes from a family of market gardeners in Cheshire on his father’s side and his mother’s family were farmers in Hertfordshire. All ever Jeff wanted to do was to be a gardener, but the fates have a habit of getting in the way.

"There’s no money in your gardening Jeff – you’re going to be an engineer" his mother said. In those days you did as you were told, but that didn’t stop the dream of becoming a gardener, so Jeff spent his free time and holidays gardening.

In the 70’s Jeff was now a time served engineer, head of mechanical engineering at Granada Television, but the passion for gardening was still there. Running his allotment and taking part in local Gardener’s Question Times he starts off the Granada Gardening Club which takes off in a big way. Run much like an allotment society to provide help, advice and cheap products for the staff, it got more and more popular, until one day the producer of Granada Tonight (the North West regions local news programme) – Sue Woodward – also a member of the gardening club, asked Jeff if he would do a similar type of thing on television, and the fates took a hand again, with a once a week show called ‘Border Patrol’ which Jeff started presenting. The viewers loved it and one night a week turned in to five nights a week very quickly. A half hour series quickly followed called ‘Muck and Jeff’ and it very quickly became the most popular regional programme that Granada had made.

Jeff’s passion for gardening has never dimmed. He is now a regional personality doing regular Gardeners Question Times around the North West whilst still maintaining the gardens for ITV Granada. Now Jeff has started a whole new career on the web with J. Parkers, presenting practical gardening videos for our website.
