Identical leaf formation to the Acer Dissectum but with deep purple finely toothed leaves that turn orange in autumn. Its ultimate height is 60-90cm with a spread of 2m reached after ten years. Japanese Maples are a must have ornamental garden plant and provide excellent shelter for wildlife when planted near a pond. Synonymous with the highly artistic oriental garden cultivated in Japan, these are ideal for patio containers or in the border as their roots are compact and non-invasive. Will perform best in partial shade but can tolerate full sun, needing extra moisture in summer if in a very dry location. When the leaves fall they will expose an intricate well branched tree. Can be lightly pruned to expose the graceful shaping of the larger branches if you wish but it?s really only necessary to remove any dead branches and let nature take its course. Supplied as a root ball 20-25cm plant.

Plant in fertile, well drained and moist soil. Acer shrubs prefer sunny or partial shaded areas, and can also be grown in pots. If growing in pots make sure that the pot is large enough to support the shrub and that it also has plenty of drainage holes. Use John Innes compost if planting in pots.
