Commonly known as Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea, Berberis hedging (purple) is a striking deciduous dwarf shrub with a compact and bushy habit, typically used as a hedging plant. Growing to a maximum height of 150cm, the spiny stems of the Barberry bear dramatic purplish-red, ovate leaves, which become brighter and more vibrant in autumn. During the spring months, this attractive hedging shrub will also yield clusters of attractive pale yellow blossom followed by deep red berries, guaranteed to attract a multitude of hungry birds to the garden. This versatile and hardy shrub is fantastically low maintenance and useful for giving vertical interest in a well-drained, sunny or partly shady border. Loose roots supplied.

Pruning is not always necessary for berberis but you can remove any unwanted shoots/branches in February. But please be careful as the plant by its very nature is thorny.A perfect plant for hedging which can be planted in fertile, well drained soil. Plant at approx 40-45cm apart.
