Berberis thunbergii

Berberis thunbergii

OUT OF STOCK
Commonly known as the Japanese Barberry Bush, Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea is a striking deciduous dwarf shrub with a compact and bushy habit, typically used as a hedging plant. Growing to a maximum height of 125cm, the spiny stems of the Barberry bear dramatic purplish-red, ovate leaves, which become brighter and more vibrant in autumn. During the spring months, this attractive hedging shrub will also yield clusters of attractive pale yellow blossom followed by deep red berries, guaranteed to attract a multitude of hungry birds to the garden. The popularity of Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea as a barrier hedge is attributable to the sharp prickles which appear on its stems, providing an excellent deterrent to intruders whilst at the same time providing a safe shelter for birds and other small wildlife. This versatile and harder shrub is fantastically low maintenance and useful for giving vertical interest in a well-drained, sunny or partly shady border. Supplied at 25-40cm. Plant 45cm apart.
