Clematis Mrs N Thompson is a large flowering Clematis which boasts 10-15cm (4-6?) purple-blue flowers, adorned with broad raspberry stripes on each petal. A ball of decorative raspberry-tipped yellow anthers sit in the centre of each flower. Free flowering over a long period, with the main flush in late spring and again in early summer. Train the stems so that they're evenly spaced on their support to encourage blooms to cover the whole plant and fill any gaps. Perfect for trellis, wall and fence displays. Eventual height 2.5m. 30cm plants supplied in a 9cm pot.

Planting

Plant with plenty of room for the roots to expand/develop.

Soil Type

Humus rich, fertile and well drained soil

Pruning

Remove dead and damaged stems after flowering, and prune back to keep under control.

On arrival, pot on the young Clematis in a 4-6 inch pot for four to six weeks to help establish a root system. Once established, plant out into the final location, preferably with good drainage and plenty of sun. Soak in a bucket of water prior to planting and plant deep enough to allow plenty of room for root development. The roots of clematis like to be kept cool so it is a good idea to plant amongst low growing shrubs or bedding plants. If planting in containers, ensure the pot is large enough to allow the roots to expand/develop, as limitation of roots will certainly impede future success.
Clematis are vigorous climbing plants that reach various heights and spreads. Its best to prune back to keep control over the growth annually and initially they should be tied in to help direct the new growth. Apply a liquid fertiliser each year during the growing season, and water regularly during hot periods.
