Growing at a glance…

Water well after planting and regularly in their first growing season. Mulch annually in spring with a good layer of leaf mound or garden compost around the plant. Slugs love hostas so you will need to protect against them. Plant straight away on arrival in any fertile, well drained soil. These are young plants, so please leave in small pots for 5 to 6 weeks and then pot on into a larger 1.5 - 2 litre pot, or plant into final spot.

What is a Hosta?

Hostas are shade-loving, clump-forming perennials that provide months of gorgeous greenery to the garden. Hostas originated in countries like Japan, China, and Korea, and were introduced to Europe in the 1800s. And we're glad they were, as they'll happily thrive in the unpredictable British weather.

Best Places to Grow Hostas

Hostas love moist soil and shady areas of the garden. We recommend planting Honeybells near a pond or rockery that's shaded by a tree or shrub. If you're growing Hostas in beds and containers, ensure their soil is kept moist, especially during warm bouts of weather.

When to Plant Hostas

Hostas can be grown at almost any point in the year, but we suggest Spring or Autumn as the ground is at its most amenable. Summer is often too hot, and Winter is too frosty, so Spring and Autumn are perfect times to grow your new plants.

Propagating Hostas

If grown in good conditions, Hotas will multiply in clumps which will need propagating. To do so, gently lift the plant out of the ground and divide the plant into two with a knife. Replant into the ground as soon as this is done to ensure they stay healthy.

After Care

Hostas aren't evergreen plants, and will die back in late autumn and lay dormant over winter. We suggest cutting back foliage once the leaves have turned a straw-brown, especially to protect the plant from slugs.

Common Pests

Slugs love Hotas, so it's a good idea to put some deterrents in place. A copper ring around the base of the plant or around a pot can do the trick, as well as popping on some sharp horticultural grit on to the surface of the soil.
