Planting Amaryllis
About
Amaryllis are big and showy blooms, appearing in spring, or if forced, winter. They're often grown for festive indoor displays, but can also be grown outdoors. They're tall, have strong stems, and look impressive even when grown on their own.

0:00 Hippeastrums or Amaryllis as you and I call them. The name was
0:05 done by a William Herbert Dean of Manchester 1837, beautiful plant.
0:10 Apparently named after the Horseman Star or the Night Star, some huge clubs
0:15 they used to beat each other around with back in those days but what a plant and
0:20 these are what you get from Parkers, thirty two centimeters, wonderful wonderful plant. Now
0:27 what about young people, young people don't do gardening, you look around
0:32 for presents for them what about this this is a beginner's guide to gardening
0:36 couldn't be simpler, few crocks in the bottom of a pot, now just on pots you
0:43 might be tempted to pull it in something that size but bear in mind this is
0:47 multi-stemmed it's gonna have three stems four or five flowers per stem this
0:51 is gonna grow big so just for the weight alone I put it in a pot this size might
0:56 look a bit big to start with but I think it'll pay dividends in the end.
1:01 A few crocks in the bottom and then some compost in, it's as simple and as easy as
1:06 that. Now imagine a young person doing this for the first time, you could show
1:10 them nothing could be simpler that's all you've got to do nice bit of
1:15 multi-purpose compost, now that is an Amaryllis, fantastic. Just push that down
1:22 a bit more compost around the base but bare in mind you don't
1:30 bury it so just firm it down nice and firm now the only what the one trick
1:36 you've got to learn with these is not to overwater until that starts growing
1:43 because then all what happens is the bulb starts to rot so don't overwater it
1:48 keep it nice and cool until you see the growing tip come out of there and then
1:53 wait for the fireworks three stems four or five flowers big trumpets magnificent
2:00 couldn't be easier for a beginner and you might just hit that spark that says
2:04 I like this gardening I'm gonna do more now there's so many colors of varieties
2:09 to choose from but my five top favorites are Black
2:13 Pearl, Apple Blossom oh that's a nice one,
2:16 Charisma, pale pink with deep pink edgings, Montblanc
2:20 pure white, and Naughty Girl. Where did he get these names from? Red and white,
2:25 beautiful. Red Peacock, that's called, oh there's so many to choose from.
