Winners Announced: Community Garden Competition

We would like to thank all of the entrants for joining in and helping make this year’s Community Garden Competition a success. We’ve had just over 100 entries, who have shared the story of their community garden via email or social, and we have been moved by how many of you are involved in such amazing and caring communities!

Our 3 lucky winners have been randomly selected and each entry had to answer this question:

How does your garden benefit the local community and how would a donation help it thrive?

Each community garden donation winner has been informed via email about their big win. So, without further adieu… here are this year’s winners!

Catterall Village ‘Chatty Bench’ WIN £30 worth of bulbs!

A little village situated north of Preston in Lancashire are trying to put the heart back into the community with gardening!

They have recently made a community garden. At its centre is a beautiful stone bench, west facing, where we hope people will sit and socialise with others. We are going to call it the ‘Chatty Bench’ and surround it with flowering shrubs and plants so people can sit and be joined by others who fancy a chat. This Chatty Bench is intended for young or old and may be the start of other Chatty Benches in the village. It will enable the lonely, vulnerable, or isolated amongst us to feel connected to the world around us and there is no better way than by being in a garden.

The Chatty Bench team would like to win a bulb donation to organise a community Bulb Planting afternoon and involve families especially children, to help decorate the village with flower bulbs.

Southborough SOS Community Garden WIN £50 worth of bulbs!

Southborough SOS’s mission statement is “Help tackle problem areas within Southborough Community, i.e. weeding, cleaning, vandalism etc. General goings on and events. Let’s help each other”.

Since April 2019, members of Southborough SOS as well as beavers and cubs from the 19th Royal Tunbridge Wells St Matthews Scout Group have started transforming two areas of land in Southborough into two community gardens. Sadly the area has a mixture of community problems but the gardens have made a vast difference and given the community a huge lift. The local beaver and cub groups now can’t wait to get out and help again this year.  They would like to win a bulb donation to continue the good work started last year!

Leicester’s Hospital Secret Garden WIN £100 worth of bulbs!

This garden based at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester is centred on promoting health and wellbeing.

They have a project underway to restore a neglected Victorian walled garden, to provide not only a haven of tranquillity for the users, staff and visitors of Leicester’s Hospitals, but also an environment and facilities to benefit the local and wider community. Plans for the garden include sensory areas, space for quiet reflection, an organic growing area and open spaces for people to gather.

With a focus on the therapeutic and social benefits of gardening, they would like a donation of bulbs and plants to help provide a valuable and much-appreciated boost to the hospital’s garden.

Our Annual Spring Photo Competition is coming soon so stay tuned!

Competition Winners Announced

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who entered or shared our recent charity competition. We have been overwhelmed with the response and it has been a great pleasure to read about some of the amazing projects being undertaken around the country.

We received so many fantastic initiatives, so many in fact that we couldn’t choose just one winner. Last year we announced in a subscriber email that we selected three overall winners, to receive a large donation of bulbs towards their community project.

We also sent out an additional runners up prize to our top 30 entrants, all of whom were sent their prizes back in November. We regret that we couldn’t support everyone who got in touch, but we’re excited to see our bulbs used to brighten communities up and down the country.

Middle Street Community Gardening group

This Nottingham based gardening project is a fantastic initiative that supports people who have Mental Health Difficulties to be involved within all aspects of gardening and developing new skills.

They describe their garden as a ‘secret garden’ in the middle of town, a place that prides itself on having a warm and friendly atmosphere where all members of the community are welcome. Their team of volunteers strive to make sure there is a place to sit and read a book, have a picnic, play games, listen to music, write poetry, take photographs keep fit, paint and just feel connected to nature in a spiritual mindfulness way. They’re hoping a donation of bulbs will create a colourful palette for young and old to admire and appreciate and perhaps encourage wildlife to the kaleidoscope of colour which spring and summer bulbs create.

Growing Together Levenshulme

This lovely group is an entirely volunteer-ran, therapeutic horticulture project. Each week, around 30 asylum seekers and refugees from across Greater Manchester come together at their Levenshulme community allotment to learn and share skills, build a supportive community, and create a beautiful and relaxing garden.

We were thrilled to be able to donate bulbs that would help them reach out to the community and transform key areas with some much-needed spring colour.

We chose this entry as one of our favourites because of their positive community spirit and their enthusiasm to include everyone. Asylum seekers are often met with hostility, and one of their propositions was to approach places where members have instead experienced support or welcome, and ‘give back’ by running gardening activities to enhance their green spaces. It is their hope to use this as an opportunity to work directly with other community groups, breaking down barriers and building understanding and connections, through gardening together.

Grey Urban Decay to Fabulous Spring Display

One of our favourite entries came from the Meanwhile Gardens Community Association, who were hoping to improve the lives of locals in their community park.

Their gardens are located in North Kensington nestled between the Grand Union Canal and the famous Trellick Tower. The area offers a beautiful green space, as well as a free skate park and Playhut “Stay & Play” drop in.

Sadly our community was badly affected by the nearby Grenfell tower disaster and for many months the mood was sombre as the tragedy unfolded.  The area has been able to offer “Eco Therapy” gardening sessions in partnership with the local NHS Trust for refugees attending their Forced Migration Trauma Service, as some attendees have suffered extreme trauma and PTSD.

They aim to use their donation as part of a Community Bulb Planting Day, inviting the community to get involved. With the help of their small gardening team, including regular volunteers, they aim to put a smile on people’s faces again by interacting with friends and neighbours by planting and enjoying growing their own little bit of paradise.
