Are you planning your summer garden display? Tropical flowers and plants look perfect in the summer garden, and our Cannas are no exception. In this handy guide, we will share our best knowledge and advice on how to plant Cannas, where to plant them and how to keep them blooming for longer!

What's So Great About Cannas?

Cannas are an excellent perennial that will add plenty of exotic style and colour to your garden displays. Their attractive dark leaf foliage and showy flowers help them stand out from the crowd. They come in a range of vibrant colours like orange, red, pink and yellow, providing an outstanding bedding, border, or container display throughout the season.

How to Plant Cannas

Our Cannas are supplied as tubers or rhizomes, which are to be planted in April and May at a depth of 7 and 10cm. We suggest starting your Cannas into growth by planting them indoors in pots and popping them outside in borders or beds towards the end of May. They will thrive in beds, borders, and conainers in a sunny position, preferably out of the wind.

Be sure to water them well during warm weather, either in the early morning or late evening once the sun has set. If you water them during the peak of the day, the water will dry up before the plant can absorb all the water and its nutrients.

Aftercare

After planting, water your Cannas generously to settle the soil around the plant. After blooming has finished for the season, leave the foliage in place and allow it to die back completely before cutting it back. This is because leaves gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s blooms.

Remove leaves when they begin to turn a brown colour. They will then take time to rest for a few months before beginning their next cycle of growth in the Spring!
