Iris tuberosa has lanced shaped glaucous leaves that will appear first. The flower-heads are a fresh yellow-green that sports a rich maroon that nears black on their recurving tepals. It has a delicate fragrance that will increase in sunshine or a warm room making it in irresistible cut flower (we recommend you plant more than you need in a garden for this reason). A native of the Mediterranean, it's amongst the most hardy and accommodating plants, flourishing everywhere in the country in almost any condition. Will naturalise well in grassy areas but is at its best featured in rockeries or pots in a sunny location. Height 15- 20cm. Flowers March/April. Top size bulbs supplied.

Soil Type

Well drained, neutral or slightly alkaline soil

Bulbs are to be planted 8cm deep and about 10-12cm apart, in well drained soil. It is often best to try to position then with plenty of access to sun. For best results, plant in September through to November.
Take some care to prevent slugs and snails from attacking the iris once planted. Most Dutch iris are only suitable for planting in the garden or in a cool greenhouse or a cold frame.
