When to Plant

Bergenia are best for planting in autumn. However, they can be planted at any time of the year if the ground is frost-free and pliable. Avoid trying to plant them throughout winter.

How to Plant

Planting Modules & Pots
Our modules and pots are incredibly easy to plant and maintain. Whether you’re growing them directly outside into the border or into a container, our pot-grown plants and modules are a breeze from the moment they arrive.

- Dig a hole in the border that’s big enough to house the entire module. If planting in pots, fill a large pot halfway with potting soil and then make several holes that can hold the modules. Do this until the top of the soil from the module is just below the top of the pot.
- Fill around the modules with soil and firm them down gently.
- Water well and you’re done!

Where to Plant

Bergenia plants can tolerate both shade and sunlight. They will also tolerate extreme shade, but the appearance of flowers will reduce. A flower bed, walkway, or even a pot will be a great place for your Bergenia to live.

When to Water

Water Bergenia well once planted, especially if that’s through summer. After that, though, they won’t need watering as regularly unless there’s a drought or they’re grown in a full sun position.

Deadheading

Your Bergenia doesn’t need to be deadheaded to thrive. However, you can trim back faded blooms to keep their appearance nice and tidy.

Common Issues & How to Solve Them

These plants are relatively disease free. Take precautions against slugs and snails, though, as they might take a particular interest. Sprinkle grit, broken shells or something sharp to the base of the plant to stop them from reaching it.

When will they Flower?

Your Bergenia will flower from late spring into summer. This is often from April to May, but it may differ depending on when they’re planted (which can be at any time of the year).
