When to Plant Dahlias

One of the most popular summertime blooms. Dahlias are loved by gardeners everywhere for their cut flowers, long lifespan and beautiful colours and shapes. Let's dive in and learn when to plant dahlia tubers and how to grow your own beautiful blooms.

When to plant Dahlias

Dahlias flower continuously through the summer, right up until the first frost of the autumn. But when should you plant them to get the best results?

Since Dahlias struggle in cold soil, don't rush to get them in the ground. Wait until all danger of frost has passed before planting out in the garden. As they're not hardy, they need to be kept indoors, away from the harsh winter weather. This means that when you first receive your tubers, you can start them into growth in a small pot filled with general-use compost.

You can then transport your Dahlias outside once the danger of frost has passed, usually from May to June. If you'd prefer to plant your tubers outside without the faff, get them in the ground around April.

How to plant Dahlias

Position dahlias in sunny spots and plant in a rich, well-drained soil. Dig a hole around 6 to 8 inches deep. Place the tubers inside with the growing points, otherwise known as "eyes" facing up.

As we mentioned, Dahlias LOVE well-drained and fertile soil. To maximise your soil, you can add a bit of compost or manure before planting. You can also add some general fertiliser to help it grow and grow and grow!

Dahlia tubers should always be planted just below the surface of the soil. Cuttings can be planted several inches below the soil's surface. Space Dahlias 60cm apart, regardless of whether they're tubers or cuttings. Add a thick layer of mulch to the surface of the soil once finished and keep it well watered throughout the growing season.

Where to Plant Dahlias

Dahlias are a valuable addition to your summer displays. But where to place them?

Large Dahlias such as our giant Dinner Plate Dahlias can be grown in borders and beds with ease. They could potentially be planted in containers, as long as the container was large enough. Small bedding-size dwarf Dahlias can be grown at the edge of the border or in containers with ease.

One thing all Dahlias have in common is their need for sunlight. They love the sun and will grow big and strong with plenty of it. That being said, also make sure the spot is sheltered from harsh winds, especially if they're tall and need support.
