How to Care for Crocosmia

Crocosmia are ideal for lovers of the exotic look. These mid- to late-summer flowering plants are an eye-catching border favourite among the gardening community. With their signature fiery hues, the sword-like leaves open to reveal a beautiful scarlet gradient.

Finding the right spot

Crocosmia are known for their versatility - able to be planted in most soil types. The easy-going flowers require a moist but well-drained soil that can retain moisture throughout the year.

The fiery plants also require a lot of sunlight. While full, direct sunlight is preferred, they can also handle light shade and dapple light. However, lower light levels lead to a reduction in flowering, so make sure they are positioned in adequate sunlight.

How to plant Crocosmia

Crocosmia are simple and easy to plant, ensuring you can begin planting for your Summer garden in just a few easy steps! Follow the steps below:

  1. Dig over your soil to alleviate any compaction beneath the surface.
  2. Dig a hole in the position you wish to place your Crocosmia (closer to the border for smaller plants and deeper into the border for larger plants).
  3. Place your plant in the hole and ensure that it is stood upright. Soil over the area to secure any gaps or holes and to make sure your plant is firmly in the ground.
  4. Water generously and leave in the sun.

Caring for your Crocosmia

  • Apply a thick layer of mulch and fertiliser to soil during the Spring and Autumn seasons to prevent moisture loss.
  • Water regularly while the plant is growing, but once it has grown do not water often.
  • In wet areas, Crocosmia can start flopping. If this occurs, simply prop up the plant with a twiggy stick or wire frame.
