How to grow Helenium

Helenium (otherwise known as Sneezeweed) are native to North America & Central America, and are one of the longest flowering summer perennials on the market. Blooming with their distinctive and colourful daisy-like flowers, these perennials are a popular choice for cottage and prairie style gardens. Keep reading to learn how to plant these vibrant summer blooms.

How to plant Helenium

Plant Helenium plants in the spring once all danger of frost has passed. These American natives love a sunny position, so try to plant them in a bright area that gets a lot of sun rays. Whether you are planting loose roots, modules or potted plants, follow these tips:

  1. Plan to plant Helenium in well draining soil (these plants prefer a rich, moist soil).
  2. Dig a hole large enough to fit your plant (large enough for the plant to fill the space, but tight enough to keep the plant upright
  3. Place your plant into the hole (if planting loose roots, plant with the point end facing upwards), then cover with soil.
  4. Water thoroughly after planting.

Helenium Maintenance Tips

  • Deadhead after blooms have faded to prolong the flowering season.
  • Cut down the stems after the flowering season so the plant can store plenty of energy for the following growing season.
  • If you like to keep fresh cut flowers, Heleniums make for a perfect cut flower display.
