How to Grow Sweet Peas

Easy to grow and even easier on the eyes, Sweet Peas are a cottage garden favourite for the summer. These beautiful, simplistic flowers are a perfect choice for beginners to get their bearings through their first summer, giving a striking show once in full bloom.

Whether this is your first time growing sweet peas, or you’re a seasoned veteran that needs a bit of a reminder, this is how to grow sweet peas.

When to Plant

Sweet peas can be grown from May to June. We supply our sweet peas as plug plants and modules, but many places sell them as seeds too. If growing from seed, you can put them in module trays with soil from autumn to mid-spring.

How to Plant

Although they are easy to plant and maintain, sweet peas do need a bit of encouragement and support. As they grow quite tall, they need support, whether in the shape of a trellis or a homemade wigwam.

Before planting, we suggest setting up the supports, as they will trail to them as they grow. You can buy supports in any garden centre, or you can make your own with bamboo canes.

Keep well-watered when in growth, tying in any stems that start climbing to the supports. Regularly deadheading encourages a full and bushy habit, so grab some for a small vase as they grow. Our sweet peas, as we mentioned, are grown from plugs or modules. These are incredibly easy to grow – simply pop out of their container and put them into the ground or container you’re going to grow them in. This can be done from May to June.

If growing from seed, know that they’re incredibly easy to germinate. Pop them in some small containers and pop them outside once they’ve entered their growth stage in May.

Where to Plant

Sweet peas don’t ask for much, but what they do need is well-drained soil and plenty of water. Ensure they’re positioned somewhere that gets lots of sunlight so they can grow big and strong.
