How to Plant Hostas

Hostas are among the most sensational shrubs on the market. Their unique foliage and large-lobed leaves make them a perfect addition to any garden display as they last for months on end.

We supply our Hostas as loose roots. This might sound scary, especially to a beginner, but trust us when we say that it couldn't be simpler! Regardless, we have this handy guide to help you through the process with minimal confusion.

When to Plant Hostas

Hostas can be planted at any time of the year. That being said, trying to plant them in frosty conditions when the ground is at its least amenable state is not the most ideal time. Spring or Autumn is preferred, as the soil is ready to grow some plants.

How to Plant Hostas

Loose roots are easier to plant than you might imagine. Here's an easy step by step guide to get you started.

Step 1 - Soak the root in a bucket of water for a few hours.

Step 2 - Hardy perennials can be planted into position straight away, but can also be potted on to quicken the growing process. You'll need a medium-sized pot for this.

Step 3 - In the pot, fill it halfway with compost. Dig a hole that's about 10-15cm deep and pop in the root. Some roots have a noticeable crown, so leave this exposed at soil level and cover the roots. For others, simply cover with compost. If the loose root is long and thin, like an Anemone, this should be planted length-ways.

Step 4 - Plant out into its final position in the garden in late spring or early summer once it has grown. Keep hydrated once in bloom!

Where to Plant Hostas

Hostas are shade-loving plants, and will happily thrive under a tree or bush, or even in an area of the garden that struggles to get sunlight. This gives you some leeway into where to plant them, whether it be in a bed, border, or container.
