Summer Flowering Iris - Our Favourite Varieties

Iris are one of those flowers that you just can't help but love! They're well-known as a reliable spring bulb... but did you know that there are also summer-flowering irises

That's right! You can have these flower bed favourites in your summer displays too. They're great for growing in pots or flower bed displays and can give you months of glorious colour.

Which Irises flower in summer?

Spring flowering Irises are known as 'Dutch Iris'. However, summer irises are different. Iris Sibirica and Iris Germanica are superb summer iris species, flowering for months on end. A couple of Dutch Iris varieties can also flower in June and July.

Here are just a few of our favourites this season. We can't wait to see if you grow them in your summer displays!

Iris Sibirica - Our Top Picks

When do they flower? May-June/July

Iris Butter & Sugar: Growing up to two flowers per stem, this buttery yellow Iris will look sensational in your summer beds. They can grow up to heights of 1.1m - a great option for mid-to-back border planting.

Iris Sugar Rush: This is an impressive variety that produces multi-coloured blooms in vibrant shades, from reds to yellows and even purples! This is a scented bloom, so plant them somewhere you can fully appreciate their fragrance.

Iris Concord Crush: Another vibrant variety. Appears in gorgeous violet-blue shades, and will flower from May to July if grown in perfect conditions. They could even be used as cut flowers, helping you get some use out of your favourite vase!

Iris Germanica (Bearded Iris) - Gorgeous for Summer

When do they flower? May-June

Iris Beverly Sills: This bloom is relatively new to the Iris Germanica range, and we can see why it's become so popular! With frilly coral-pink blooms, you'll find yourself eager to see them pop up in May.

Iris Raspberry Flush: If you love pastel shades in your summer garden, then this Bearded Iris is the one for you. With delicate purples and pinks, this bloom also produces a gorgeous fragrance! Perfect for both flower beds and cut flower displays.

Iris Black Tie Affair: Dark and mysterious sums up this Iris perfectly. Its near-black shade and slight purple hue make it a unique addition to your existing summer beds.
