What to Plant With Lilies - Planting Companions

Structural, attractive, fragrant. That’s just a few select words for describing the ever-popular lily. Beloved by florists across the globe, lilies steal a top spot for bouquet favourites every year. But have you ever considered growing them in your garden?

Our lily bulbs are easy to grow and are even easier on the eyes. But what do you plant alongside them? Here are a few of our favourite plants for those wondering what to plant with lilies!

Lavender

Creating a harmonious combination of colour and fragrance would be our first port of call. That’s where lavender comes in. Many lilies can grow quite tall, whereas a lavender hedge or shrub is shorter. They’re ideal for growing at the front of the border, and their purple and blue shades will combine wonderfully with your striking lilies. Varieties like Lavender Hidcote and Lavender Alba are a great choice or shop our full lavender range here.

Ornamental grasses

If you’re after a different type of texture, then ornamental grasses are a great addition to any display. Many will even add colour to your gardens all year round! Perhaps a Hebe or a Hosta? Or even a fern or two will look the part.

Kniphofia

Fiery shades go hand in hand, and Kniphofia provide plenty of excitement! Their unique tropical shape makes them the perfect lily companion plant. Popular varieties like Kniphofia uvaria Red Hot Poker are many gardeners’ go-to because they’re the most popular. But we have a broad selection of Kniphofia for you to browse!

Salvia

Cool tones go great with fiery, sunny colours. That’s why we love combining our Lilies with Salvia. From jewel tones to brooding blues and purples, salvia looks sensational with any variety of lily. Salvia Amistad and Salvia Roman Red are gorgeous and will look at home with any lily bloom.

Geraniums

Tall lilies would look that smidge more statuesque if they emerge from mound-forming perennials. For example, hardy geraniums – their purples and blues will create a glorious backdrop for any white or creamy-coloured lily.
