Product Description
Bring summer drama and elegance to your garden with Agapanthus ‘Melbourne’. This herbaceous perennial grows to around 80 cm tall, forming neat clumps of strap-like leaves topped by sturdy stems. Rounded flower heads open from deep purple buds to reveal white petals delicately striped with lilac, adding a graceful touch of colour from mid-summer into early autumn.
Agapanthus ‘Melbourne’ thrives best in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny, sheltered position. It is perfect for planting in both borders and containers. In colder climates, growing this cultivar in pots allows for easy winter protection by moving it indoors or to a frost-free location.
‘Melbourne’ is valued not only for its striking flowers but also for its sturdy stems, making it ideal for cut arrangements. For a dynamic and textured summer display, consider pairing it with Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ or Verbena bonariensis, both of which complement its colour and upright form.

Growing at a glance…
To plant loose rooted agapanthus, start by soaking the roots in a bucket of water for 1-2 hours beforehand. Then, dig a hole in the border that’s big enough to house the root system. If you’re planting them in pots, then fill a large pot halfway with soil, adding the crown of the plant pointing upwards. Ensure the crown is just below the soil. Water well once planted. Loose rooted agapanthus should be planted in spring directly into the garden somewhere that gets plenty of sunshine.
Our agapanthus potted plants can be grown directly outside in the border or into a container on arrival. Dig a hole that’s big enough to house the root system in your desired planting spot, at the same depth as they are in their pot. Wedge the plant in by adding soil to the gaps left, firming the plant down gently to ensure it’s in place. These perennials will flower from early summer through to mid-autumn. Mulch well with compost or organic matter for winter protection. Position in full sun or partial shade.
