Product Description
Burnt-orange blooms light up summer borders with the bold presence of Dahlia ‘David Howard’. Rising to around 90 cm on upright stems, its deep bronze-tinged foliage and structured habit create a strong backdrop for lower perennials or ornamental grasses.
Flowering from July to October, ‘David Howard’ provides a long succession of large, fully-double flowers that work equally well in borders, containers, or as cut blooms. Bees and other pollinators are naturally drawn to its open, accessible centres, adding a subtle wildlife benefit to its garden impact.
Dahlia ‘David Howard’ grows best in fertile, well-drained soil under full sun, responding reliably to regular watering and occasional staking. Combine it with architectural grasses such as Miscanthus sinensis or billowy herbaceous perennials like Salvia nemorosa, where its glowing flowers and dark foliage provide striking contrast and depth. Bold, reliable, and fuss-free, it anchors a hot-colour border or adds structure to mixed palettes with ease.

Growing at a glance…
Dahlia tubers can be planted outdoors, 10cm deep in fertile well-drained soil in spring when the frost has disappeared. They prefer to be in a sunny location and spaced at approximately 45cm apart. In areas where there is extreme cold, dig up dahlias and store in potting compost over the winter. Apply a high potash fertiliser every few weeks in the summer to help growth. Dead head when necessary.
