Originating from exotic Turkey and Bulgaria, Hypericum calycinum (commonly known as Rose of Sharon) is one of the best varieties for ground cover, even in dry shady areas. This shrubby low-growing plant is extremely valuable for its weed smothering habits and long flowering season. Not only that, but it is very popular with bees. The large bright yellow star-shaped flowers with prominent red-tipped anthers make a sunny display for four whole months from June to September, on a bed of ovate mid -green leaves which produce a lovely scent when slightly squeezed. As Hypericum calycinum is such a fast spreading variety, sometimes it can grow a little too quickly and out of control. Simply chop around plants with a spade to halt the creeping stems. Annually pruning stems to the ground improves flowering and resistance year after year. Grows to only 40cm, with a spread of up to 3m. 9cm pot grown plants supplied.
