Product Description

Our Acer palmatum ‘Beni-maiko’ is a compact, bushy Japanese maple renowned for its striking seasonal foliage. In spring, its delicate, lobed leaves emerge in a vivid scarlet-red before softening to pinkish-red with green undertones through summer. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into a fiery blend of orange, yellow and deep red, delivering an extended season of interest.

Reaching a mature height and spread of 1-1.5 metres, this slow-growing deciduous shrub is well suited to smaller gardens, patios or as a striking specimen in mixed borders. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil, preferring an acidic to neutral pH - performing best in a sheltered position with dappled or partial shade. While it can tolerate some sun, especially in cooler regions, this level of shade will protect its foliage from scorch and help maintain its vibrant colouration.

Beyond its ornamental value, ‘Beni-maiko’ lends itself beautifully to a range of planting styles, from Japanese-themed spaces to modern urban schemes. Its refined shape and seasonal colour changes make it particularly effective in containers, offering design flexibility and year-round impact in compact spaces.

Growing at a glance…

Acers should be watered on a regular basis, which will be even more important in hot Summers. Although its not necessary, you can prune back or cut dead wood in Spring. Plant in fertile, well drained and moist soil. Acer shrubs prefer sunny or partial shaded areas, and can also be grown in pots. If growing in pots make sure that the pot is large enough to support the shrub and that it also has plenty of drainage holes.
