Product Description

Few flowers command attention quite like ‘Speech’, a Dahlia that declares its presence the moment it blooms. An RHS-recognised anemone-flowered variety, it forms a compact, upright clump of dark green foliage reaching around 0.5-1 metre in height - elegant in shape yet sturdy enough to hold its own among taller border companions. Its neat habit brings order and rhythm to planting schemes without ever feeling rigid.

At the heart of each flower, deep crimson florets cluster densely, surrounded by broader outer petals tipped and brushed with pure white. The contrast is immediate and striking - rich, warm tones offset by cool highlights that catch the light beautifully from midsummer through to the first frosts. Long-lasting blooms ensure ‘Speech’ remains a centrepiece well into autumn, when many others have faded.

Thriving in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, Dahlia ‘Speech’ reliable performer in both cutting gardens and mixed borders. Its dramatic colouring pairs particularly well with cooler companions such as Salvia, Perovskia or airy ornamental grasses, each enhancing the other’s tone and texture.

Growing at a glance…

Dahlia tubers can be planted outdoors, 10cm deep in fertile well-drained soil in spring when the frost has disappeared. They prefer to be in a sunny location and spaced at approximately 45cm apart. In areas where there is extreme cold, dig up dahlias and store in potting compost over the winter. Apply a high potash fertiliser every few weeks in the summer to help growth. Dead head when necessary.
