If you're new to growing Hydrangeas, then you might have a few questions on how to care for them once they're planted.

Today, we're answering a burning question that our customers ask often - Can hydrangeas grow in shade?

Can Hydrangeas Grow in Shade?

The short answer is, yes, they can! However, like most plants, it depends on the variety. Some love the sun, some prefer a dappled shade (perhaps under a swaying tree), and some can tolerate deep shade.

Most hydrangeas can be grown in dappled shade, which is handy if your garden is slightly rambling and full of fabulous plants. It's important to note that south-facing positions in the garden are best avoided, as the soil can be quite dry.

For super shady spots, climbing hydrangeas are highly recommended instead of shrubby varieties.

More Hydrangea FAQs

Q: Do you need to deadhead hydrangeas?

A: Although many like to deadhead the flower from hydrangeas to keep it looking tidy, it’s not essential.

Q: Should I fertilise my hydrangea?

A: Using feeds and fertilisers on hydrangeas can cause them to concentrate all their energy into producing foliage rather than flowers.

Q: Can I grow Hydrangeas in a pot?

A: Some varieties of dwarf Hydrangeas are wonderfully compact. Be on the hunt for dwarf hydrangeas online or at garden centres, as they will thrive in a patio pot.

Q: How do Hydrangeas change colour?

A: For Hydrangeas macrophylla, the colour of their flowers indicates the pH of the soil they’re growing in. In strong acidic soil, the flowers will be blue. In slightly acidic or neutral soil, the flowers can be either purple, blue, or pink, or all three on one shrub. And finally, in alkaline soils, the flowers can be pink or even bright red.

Results of this may vary, depending on the variety of Hydrangea you grow. It’s important to note that white hydrangeas will not change colour, regardless of your soil’s pH.
