How to Grow Agapanthus

Native to South Africa, the exotic summer flower Agapanthus (African Lily) makes the perfect addition to sunny borders and garden beds. Showcasing clusters of beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers, these blooms are becoming a firm favourite at UK flower shows and gardener's love them too! Keep reading to discover how to plant, care and maintain Agapanthus plants.

How to Grow Agapanthus

Agapanthus are one of the easiest perennial plants to grow. Drought resistant, pest resistant and low maintenance, these stunning flowers are a must for an easy going summer garden. Plant in a bright and sunny position in a well-draining soil for optimal results.

For loose rooted plants:

Plant in the spring time after all danger of frost has passed.

Dig a hole large enough to fit your loose rooted plant (enough to give them enough room to grow, but tight enough to keep them upright). Position in the hole with the pointy end of the plant facing upwards, then cover with soil and water well.

For potted plants:

Similarly to loose rooted varieties, plant potted Agapanthus in the spring time after all danger of frost has passed.

Dig a hole large enough to fit your potted plant comfortably. Place your plant into the hole and cover and firm with soil. Water well after planting.

Agapanthus Maintenance Tips

  • To keep them safe from cold weather, add a heavy mulch around the root zone to protect the plant.
  • If you're garden doesn't receive full sun, these plants can be grown in a partial shaded position.
  • Water regularly during the growing season.
  • Feed twice in the spring time to get the best results from your blooms.
  • Remove faded blooms after flowering to promote new growth
