How to Plant Cosmos

Cosmos are an essential addition to any gardener's display, especially if you're looking to add lots of colour that lasts for months on end.

Sounds ideal, right? Want to know what else is amazing about cosmos? We supply them as plugs and modules, which means planting them is as easy as pie! They're perfect for beginners, as they take seconds to plant, and their low-maintenance nature means that they will sit happily in the garden, thriving in the summer sun.

When to Plant Cosmos

If you're planning to plant out your modules straight into the garden, this is best done from March to April. This gives the plant plenty of time to form a generous root system. Be sure that all risk of frost has passed, as this can damage the plant.

Our garden ready plugs arrive in a green state, which you can plant directly outside in March. Maxi plugs are a slightly smaller version of garden ready modules, so they may need potting on before planting outside. If you've never done this before, then our guide to planting maxi plugs will show you how!

How to Plant Cosmos

Cosmos love the sunshine, so make sure that wherever you plant them, they get plenty of rays. If your garden is a bit (or very) shady, then we suggest planting them in containers and patio pots. This way you can move them around throughout the day to sit in the sunshine as it moves around the garden.

Garden ready plugs can be planted directly into the soil outside, whether that be In beds or containers. Simply remove them from their plastic tray and put them to one side while you dig a hole in the soil. Ensure the hole is big enough for the plug to fit in, with the base of the plant at soil level. Cover with soil and water generously.

Where to Plant Cosmos

As long as they are planted in well-drained soil and get lots of sunshine, Cosmos aren’t picky on their placement. Can be grown in both a well-groomed border or flower bed where they will add a pop of colour to your displays or in containers which are perfect for those who may not have plant beds or need something to jazz up the patio.
