How to Plant Plug Plants

Planting plug plants (otherwise known as annual plants) is one of the easiest ways to grow your favourite seasonal blooms. Whether you're ordering maxi plugs, rapid plugs, or garden ready plugs, each one has a similar planting process that is both quick and easy.

If you're new to gardening or just need a quick refresher on how to plant plug plants, here's the best way to do it as recommended by our gardening experts.

Step 1 - Maxi and Rapid Plugs

Our plug plants come in trays that are easy to unpack. For maxi and rapid plugs, it's important to unpack them and add moisture to the compost before you pot them up. They may look a bit uninspiring on arrival, but a quick drink will soon perk them up!

To remove a plant from the tray, use the end of a pencil to gently push it out from the bottom. Select a few small pots to grow individual plugs in to help them retain moisture before you pot them on after a few weeks (if the weather allows).

Step 2 - Maxi and Rapid Plugs

Add a little compost to each pot, and make a hole in the centre that is slightly bigger than the plug. Pop it in, pat down gently and water tenderly. Keep their soil moist until it's time to plant them outside (once all threat of frost has passed).

It's best to use a watering can rather than a hose, as these young plants are rather delicate. Keep them on a window sill or in a sunny greenhouse for roughly 4-5 weeks until it's time to plant your plug plant in your desired location.

Harden off your plants before planting them into their final positions. Pop them outside in the daytime, and bring them in at night. Do this for about 8-10 days before planting to help them become accustomed to the outdoor climate.

How to Plant Garden Ready Plugs

If you've ordered Garden Ready plugs, these can be planted straight away - if the weather allows. However, these can also be put into pots to grow out before planting on if you deem necessary; especially if you've bought them before April or May and you suspect more frost is on the way.

And there you have it! An easy plant to grow in your displays, whether that's the flower bed, in a container, or a hanging basket. If you're ready to give them a go, why not explore our full range of plug plants online?
