0:05 Hi, I'm Hannah and I work for J. Parker's. Today I'm going to show you how to plant daffodil bulbs

0:10 and I'm going to show you in a container just for ease of the uh tutorial but you can also

0:16 plant them in the ground as well. So for this I've filled this terracotta pot um a little way up with

Fill your pot with compost
0:24 multi-purpose compost and grit for drainage um so I've not filled it as much as some of the other

0:30 tutorials just because they need to be planted quite deep. Again, with other bulbs you need to

Find the right side of the bulb
0:34 make sure that you're planting them the right way up so with a daffodil bulb that would be this way,

0:39 so there's an obvious point and an obvious flat part of the bulb, so you need to make sure it's

0:44 this way up and they need to be planted at three times the depth of the bulb, so that's why there's

Plant your bulbs
0:51 not much compost in here, because they need to be quite deep it's quite a big bulb spacing wise

0:56 I'm going to put maybe six in here um and I'll show you the spacing after I've put them in um

1:03 but it's usually about double the size of the bulb. So I'm just going to pop them in... okay,

1:14 and then I always like to put one in the middle as well just so it looks full when they come through.

1:20 So it should look something like this. Okay and then I'm just going to cover that up with more

Top of the bulbs with compost
1:27 multiple purpose compost and grit and then um and then I'll top it off with grit again. Okay so I've

1:50 just evened it out, so you want to aim to be doing this sort of September October time um and they'll

When to plant your bulbs
1:56 start flowering um from sort of March onwards. What I like to do after this is to just cover

Adding potting grit
2:01 it with grit. So it's just horticultural potting grit. Okay and I'll just even that out um and this

2:22 is mainly just to stop the slugs from eating the new shoots when they come through in the spring.

Watering tips
2:27 And then watering wise I've used a damp compost and then because winter's quite a wet season,

2:33 you probably wouldn't need to water it again after that just because you don't want your bulbs to

2:38 rot off over the winter so I would just pop this where you eventually want them to sit um as long

2:44 as it's a sheltered space and then you won't need to water it over winter. And then again,

2:50 any daffodils that you are planting in the ground you just need to use um a bulb planter

2:55 and then the the rules are the same just uh three times the depth of the bulb and

3:00 they should come up fine and then what you want to do is label that and put it where you want

3:04 it um for your displays in the spring and then that should be that should be ready to go now.

0:00 Narcissi or Paperwhite Narcissi actually comes from the ancient word for papyrus

0:07 or paper-like and slowly over the years it's changed to Paperwhite but a

0:11 beautiful plant and the perfume of the Paperwhite is magnificent.

0:15 Now there's 15 in a collection and you could plant easily two pots this size

0:20 with those bulbs with one layer but what I like to do is pack them in so I'm

0:25 going to do it in two layers. So you'll get the whole 15 multi-headed and the

0:30 perfume is fantastic, easy-peasy. Few crocks in the bottom just to allow

0:35 drainage, couple of hand-fulls of compost it's easy as that and then a nice layer

0:43 of bulbs. Now, so I'll put about six or seven in the bottom and then in the gaps

0:51 between them I'll put some more compost on top like that and really couldn't be

1:00 easier and the perfume, I tell you, of these Paperwhites is fantastic. Now all

1:06 you need to do is a nice circle. Now don't worry about it, the bottom ones

1:09 will just push the way through. They really are wonderful and easy and it's

1:14 as simple as simple as that. That's all you have to do Paperwhite Narcissi.

1:21 Another two-inch layer on top and they're ready to go. All you need to do

1:27 then is keep them cool and you could call these clockwork bulbs because an

1:33 idea is, these after four to six weeks will flower and flower and flower, wonderful

1:40 perfume. Plant them in successions, week at a time,

1:44 and you've got flowers right the way through the Christmas period. I'll tell

1:49 you what they're beautiful so that's the Paperwhite. There are two others

1:52 available: Soleil D'Or and Early Cheer, both are

1:56 beautiful. They just take a little bit more care keep those in the dark, cover

2:00 them over with a paper for a few weeks, and otherwise they're exactly the same

2:04 as these. Multi-headed, beautiful perfume, but do try the idea are planting a pot

2:09 of these every week. Beautiful perfume in your house for the

2:13 whole of December, fantastic.

0:00 So, I thought I'd give you some advice on what daffodil varieties to plant in your

0:04 garden to extend the flowering period. Similar to tulips, there’s three main

0:09 flowering periods for daffodils. So, there’s early, mid’s and lates. So,

0:13 the best thing to do is to choose a couple of varieties from each flowering period to make

0:18 them flower for as long as possible. You can choose one colour palette,

0:23 you might go for the paler varieties and have a few of those, or you might go for

0:27 larger daffodils or rockery daffodils. The choice is yours really, um, if you just choose a couple

0:33 from each flowering period then that would be ideal. You can then partner these up with

0:38 other flowering bulbs in the spring as well, so you can introduce some muscari or crocus,

0:43 or snowdrops and have both at the same time so that’ll give a lot of interest to your garden.
