A form of French Pomme D'Api, which dates back over 200 years. The small, sweet fruit has dark red/burgundy skin. The lovely crisp apple's striking colouring has made them a popular choice over the years for decorative gardens and table garlands. In spring it blossoms with pretty white flowers, the fruit follows in October. It will grow up to 3m but can be pruned annually to keep at a more manageable height, or for a slightly less vigorous bush can be grown in a large container, perfect for the patio.

Most urban gardens will not require a pollination partner as partners are usually found in close proximity. For people in rural areas it is advised that you choose two varieties from either the same pollination group or one above or one below. We have chosen to sell only group B and C varieties to help with this, so each one will cross pollinate with another from our apple range.

We supply hardy two year old trees grafted onto dwarf root stock called M26. Many cheaper alternatives supply the smaller M27 root stock, which is unreliable and will only produce a fraction of the fruit that the M26 will.

Pruning

Late Winter/Early Spring

Apple trees are suitable for planting in most types of moderately fertile, well drained soil, although they do not like acid soil. If possible prepare the ground some time in advance of planting. Open out holes and plant with enough space to accommodate the roots without cramping them. Plant in a sunny location as they do not prosper too well in the shade. Make sure that you plant with a stake, as this will be needed for at least five years to help support the tree. Begin weed control prior to planting and keep a clean ring around the plant (with a radius of approx 24inches).
Young trees must be watered thoroughly and sprinkle with fertilizer each spring. You can also mulch in April with rotted manure or compost around the base of the trunk. They should be planted in well sheltered locations. They will blossom and flower in Spring and fruit is normally ready to be picked throughout Autumn.
