Deep-toned and architectural, Fritillaria imperialis ‘Rubra’ forms a striking crown of nodding, bell-shaped flowers in rich red to burnt orange tones, held beneath a tuft of glossy green bracts. Strong upright stems carry whorled foliage along their length, building a layered vertical structure that typically reaches around 100 cm.
A sunny position and fertile, free-draining soil provide the best results, especially where conditions remain reliably dry through winter. Flowering in April and May, it moves quickly into growth, establishing height early before the foliage matures and gradually dies back as flowering concludes.
In mixed borders, the saturated colouring of ‘Rubra’ adds depth and intensity, combining especially well with Tulipa, Narcissus and Allium. Its upright habit rises cleanly through lower planting, introducing height and rhythm without disturbing the surrounding structure.

Growing at a glance…
Plant bulbs from September through to mid-December. Plant large bulbs at least 30cm deep, spaced 10cm apart. Small bulbs can be planted 5cm deep and around 3-4cm apart. For best results, plant in beds and borders, or even in containers if it's large enough and has holes for drainage. Deadhead regularly to encourage new growth, and leave to die back once they've finished flowering to allow the bulb to soak up all the energy from the sun.
