Tatton Park - Get the Look!

On our adventure to Tatton Park, it was hard not to notice their uniform displays and unique blooms (even if some of them weren’t quite in season yet).

If you read our previous blog 'Come with us to Tatton Park - Top things to See and Do', you’ll remember that the gardeners at Tatton Park model their aesthetic around plants available in the 1800s. However, these plants are still very much available today, and you can grow them too!

Here are just a few examples of perfect plants to grow to create a Tatton-worthy display this upcoming summer season.

The Best of Bedding

The Italian Garden, created circa 1890, is the backdrop of the mansion. Its focal point, the statue of Neptune, is surrounded by beautiful garden bedding blooms. When we visited, volunteers were busy planting pansies in the beds – a perfect pick for the summer garden.

Bedding blooms are among the easiest plants to grow each season. Our bedding plants are supplied as plugs and modules. Unlike other plants like bulbs or tubers, plugs only need a bit of attention before planting (unless they’re garden ready). Perfect for growing along a border or walkway, container, or even hanging basket for extra colour throughout the summer months.

A Taste of the Topics

Just right of the Italian garden is the Fernery and Conservatory. This was once attached to the main mansion by a walkway, which was removed. The Conservatory still stands, attached to the Fernery. Inside you’ll find all kinds of exquisite tropical plants and blooms, ones that would have been imported abroad once the Egerton family discovered them on their travels.

Tropical plants are having a comeback this year, with many aching to see the same sights you’d get in sunny countries in their own back garden.

Superb Shrubs

Tatton is certainly no stranger to shrubs! From large and detailed bushes to ground cover shrubs, their love for some greenery is certainly no secret.

Shrubs are perfect for adding to any seasonal display. Their extra greenery will provide interest and colour for months on end, especially with Evergreen or hardy varieties.

Kitchen Garden Galore

The first garden you’ll come across as you enter is the Kitchen Gardens. This is, as you can imagine by the name, where they grow all the produce on the estate. They then sell their produce in their shop or donate it to local charities and shops.

When we visited, it wasn’t quite peak produce season. However, when I’ve been before in the height of summer, their selection of allotment goodies is large and exciting! From herbs to rhubarb, strawberries to lettuces, there’s lots to see and admire.

Of course, you don’t need your own allotment to grow fruits and vegetables. Even those with the smallest of gardens can grow all kinds of produce, like potatoes in bags or raspberries in containers.
