Product Description
Bring old-fashioned charm and bold colour to your garden with our Sweet William Messenger Mix. A traditional favourite, it’s known for its clusters of frilled blooms and sweet clove-like scent. This cheerful blend combines deep reds, rose pinks, snowy whites and two-tone bi-colours, each with distinctive contrasting eyes, creating a standout display from late spring into early summer.
A hardy biennial from the Dianthus family, Sweet William reaches up to 60 cm tall, producing sturdy, upright stems ideal for borders, beds and cutting gardens. Its neat foliage and compact habit also suit containers and cottage-style planting schemes. Best grown in fertile, well-drained soil, it flourishes in full sun or partial shade.
We recommend planting in prepared soil, spacing each plant around 30 cm apart to give them room to establish. Regular watering during dry spells and the removal of spent flowers will promote stronger blooming. For a more naturalised look, try pairing this mix with hardy annuals such as Nigella or Cornflower.
We guarantee our great value mixture packs contain a comprehensive blend of variety and colours. By definition, the components of the mixtures are not labelled/named on arrival.

Growing at a glance…
Our plants are available in two main formats to suit different gardening needs and planting times: Maxi plug plants and garden-ready plug plants.
Maxi plugs are young, UK-grown plants that will need care and attention. Supplied in trays of 33 or 66, they measure approximately 6-9 cm in height with a 2.2 cm plug width. When potted up and grown for a few weeks, they are capable and frost-hardy enough for winter conditions.
For a more immediate planting solution, our garden-ready alternatives come in trays of 20 or 30 larger plugs, each up to 15 cm tall with a plug width of around 5 cm. These robust plants can be planted straight into beds, borders or containers upon arrival and are well suited for both spring and autumn planting - though they should be avoided during periods of severe frost.
Regardless of type, all plants arrive nursery-fresh in protective packaging and benefit from regular watering after planting to help roots establish. For best results, plant in a weed-free location with adequate sunlight and continue to deadhead or prune as needed to encourage healthy, prolonged growth.
