Flower Seeds to Sow In Summer

Hand sowing seeds in black trays

Seeds that are sown in summer can either be planted out in winter as seasonal bedding (pansies), or stored over winter in a greenhouse, ready to plant out the following spring.

From annuals to biennials and perennials, sowing seeds is one of the cheapest ways to grow your favourite seasonal blooms and plants. Here are just a few examples of flower seeds to sow in summer.

Boy picking cornflower blue boy

Cornflowers - Cornflowers are attractive wildflowers that are easy to grow and even easier on the eye. They can be sown indoors over winter, ready to plant out in spring - or sown directly outdoors in early summer for a bout of blooms. We recommend varieties like Cornflower Blue Boy and Cornflower White.

Pansies - Pansies are winter and spring-flowering favourites that can brighten any display with ease. They're great for growing with children as they're so easy to plant. We recommend sowing pansy seeds outside from May to July for a following spring display. Varieties like Pansy Hiemalis Mix and Pansy Swiss Giant Mix are highly recommended for spring bedding and basket displays.

Purple pink foxgloves

Foxgloves - Also known as digitalis. These sun-loving, pollinator-friendly super summer blooms are a must for your garden - especially if you have a cottage garden theme. Sow these seeds indoors from April to July or outdoors from May to July. Foxgloves like Digitalis Purpurea Mixed and Digitalis Foxy will look perfect in your garden!

Cosmos - Yet another easy-to-sow and grow bloom. This plant performs magnificently over summer. Sow indoors from March to April and outside from May to June. We recommend varieties like Cosmos Seashells Mix for a striking summer garden that offers lots of colour.

orange and yellow nasturtiums with green leaves

Lupins - Another cottage favourite, perfect for attracting bees and butterflies. Their pea-shaped flowers appear in a wide range of vibrant colours. Sow seeds indoors from March-May or directly outside from April-May. Varieties like Lupin Russell Mix will look sensational in your display.

Nasturtiums - These blooms have been labelled as one of the easiest annuals to grow for a mid-summer flush. Not only do they look fantastic, but you can even eat their leaves and seeds! A versatile option for summer, that's for sure. Sow directly outdoors from May to July to see them bloom from July to October. We recommend planting options like Nasturtium 'Empress of India' and Nasturtium 'Salmon Baby'
