0:05 Hi, I'm Hannah and I work for J. Parker's. Uh, today I'm going to show you how to plant tulip

0:09 bulbs. I'm going to show you in a container just because it's a little bit easier for me

0:19 to show you, but all of the same rules that I'll speak to you about apply in the ground as well.

0:25 Um so I have filled a terracotta pot um, pretty much most of the way with multi-purpose compost

Tutorial + tips
0:33 and I've mixed some grit in there for drainage as well. Um so I've just filled it about this

0:39 much. So with your tulip bulb um the same as as other bulbs you want to make sure that you have

0:46 planted it the right way up, so with a tulip bulb it's a lot easier than some to tell which is the

0:52 right way up, so there's a very pointy end and a flat end. So you want to make sure that they go in

0:58 this way up. So, spacing wise I think with tulips it doesn't matter as much as others um a lot of

1:05 people like to put as many as they can uh into a pot so you get as many flowers as you can in one

1:10 pot. So I'm not going to worry too much about my spacing. Um so I'm just going to pop all of these

1:18 in, so this is just one full pack that I'm going to put in this container so it's one full pack of

1:24 10. Okay, so it should look a little bit like this when you've popped them all in there. Okay, so the

1:39 next thing that you want to do is to fill this up with multi more compost so more multi-purpose

1:45 so I'll do that now. Okay... okay, so I've just evened that out um so that might look like they're

2:08 planted quite deep um but as a rule of thumb it's two or three times the size of the bulb

2:13 so it should be fine and then what I like to do is to top this off with potting grit as it just keeps Top off with potting grit

2:19 the slugs and snails at bay as soon as the weather starts to warm up in Spring and your shoots come

2:24 through um that's when the slugs like to come and eat all eat all your new shoots so I'll like to

2:30 um cover this with grit. So I'll just do that now, so this is just horticultural potting grit. Okay,

2:44 and then I'll just even that out. Okay so the best time of year to plant tulips is towards

When to plant your bulbs
2:52 the end of October November uh you can also get away with December if you forget about them,

2:57 it shouldn't be too late so anytime towards sort of the end of autumn early winter you can plant

3:02 your tulips. And then you can just pop this um somewhere sheltered in the garden they're

3:07 frost hardy so there shouldn't be a problem over winter if there's any frosts and then

3:11 if you just make sure you label it so you know what's in here then you should be good to go.

:00 Hi, I thought I’d give you some advice on choosing the right tulips, uh, for your garden. There’s a

0:05 few things to think about when you choosing your tulips. If you want to have your tulip display

0:10 last as long as possible, you’re best choosing a few types from each sort of flowering period

0:16 to extend that season a little bit longer. So, you could choose a couple of earlies, a couple

0:21 of mids, and a couple of lates just to keep the season, uh, flowering all the way through. You

0:27 probably want to consider your colour palette, um, so if you just want tulips, you could just choose

0:32 a couple of tulips from each sort of flowering period and keep them to one colour palette,

0:37 or if you want to mix them with other things like Narcissi or Muscari, you might want to choose ones

0:43 that will go with that colour palette as well. Uh, so if you get an idea about what colours you want

0:47 in your garden, that will help you choose your tulips as well. You could actually do a tulip bulb

0:54 lasagne as well. So, you could get a full season of tulips in one pot if you wanted to, uh, if you

1:02 just make sure that your latest flowering tulips go at the bottom, then the mids, and then your

1:07 earlies on the top, that will give you a full season of tulips in one area. And, as I’ve said,

1:12 you can mix these with other bulbs as well, so you could have your earlies flowering with

1:17 early flowering muscari, or crocus, and then you could have your lates with other things, you could

1:23 even have them with some perennials as well that flower at that time just to extend the period.

0:00 Right now we've got a nice small rockery and we've got some clumps of Tulips.

0:05 Now obviously the great big statuesque Tulips would be no good in this area but

0:10 in this area dwarf Tulips, now these are magnificent they really are because that

0:14 they're only gonna grow to about 15 to 20 centimeters I mean beautiful things.

0:19 Just the same colour range as you get with the big ones but wonderful

0:23 wonderful dwarf flowering. Now Tulips, named after a Turk's turban, and you can

0:28 understand why. Now these will naturalize perfectly well in this area they'll come

0:32 up and have this little magic effect of they come up with a little block of

0:35 colour that just catches your eye every time you walk by. Now the dwarf Tulips

0:41 Greigii and Kaufmanniana, I'll tell you what ,fantastic. Look out for Pinocchio, Red

0:47 Riding Hood or even better the double Red Riding Hood. Early Harvest, Stresa,

0:53 but if you want the save a few pounds what about a collection? Greigii Tulips

0:58 Mixed or the dwarf Botanical Tulip collection, I'll tell you what they're

1:02 all beautiful, whichever one you choose you're doing the right thing.

1:06 Now I'm planting these in a clump of about 15 and they're gonna look beautiful.

1:11 Kaufmanniana and Greigii varieties. I'm gonna plant four or five different

1:17 varieties around the rockery and next year when you see them you're

1:21 gonna be impressed and you're gonna want to do it yourself so all I can say

1:26 to you is have a go You really can't go wrong with

1:28 planting bulbs. It's as simple as it can be. Pointed end up, rounded end down, about

1:36 two inches apart so there you go. It really is as simple as that, but this is

1:40 going to create a real splash of colour come the springtime and because I bought

1:47 a collection I've got about another five varieties to put in, I've saved myself a

1:51 few quid. That's always a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
