Seeds to Sow in March

March is finally here, and with it comes spring! Spring is a busy season for sowing and planting seeds, and March is no exception. As the weather starts to warm up a bit, sowing hardy seeds directly outside and starting them indoors will become part of your regular gardening routine! 

Here's a list of seeds to sow in March, from vegetables to flowers. 

Veg Seeds to Sow In March

- Tomato seeds can be sown indoors throughout March, whether that be in a greenhouse or in a cold frame. Varieties like Tomato Gardener's Delight and Tomato Cherry Baby are great for sowing indoors from March until May. 

Perennials herbs - Herbs like rosemarysage, oregano, and thyme should be planted under cover from now until late spring/early summer. These plants can easily be grown inside in containers, making a great windowsill plant! 

Early cropping Broad Beans - Early cropping broad beans like Broad Bean Masterpiece Green can be sown indoors or outdoors from March through to May. They'll be ready to harvest by May, depending on when they were grown! 

From mid-March - Some vegetable seeds needn't be sown until mid-March. This includes plants like beetroots, carrots, chard, spinach - all of which can be sown inside or directly outdoors for a summer crop. 


Flower Seeds to Sow In March



Hardy annuals sown outsideFlower seeds for plants like stocks, poppies and cornflowers can be sown directly outdoors from March. Their hardy qualities helps them survive from now until May, when the last dribs and drabs of frost have passed. 

Wildflower seed mixes - These handy mixtures, wherever you buy them from, can typically be sown directly outside from this month in a sunny position. Simply sow the seeds into well-raked soil. 

Sweet peas directly outside - Sweet peas can be sown directly into flower beds from March. Don't forget to give seedlings support as they begin to grow! Our new sweet peas are great contenders to start with, especially Sweet Pea Royal Family Mix and Sweet Pea Grandiflora Matucana

Seeds to Sow Indoors -  Seeds for plants like asters, cosmos, and petunias can be sown indoors from March, ready to be planted out in June! Varieties like Aster Peony MixCosmos Dwarf Mix, and our Petunia Balcony Mix will look superb in your summer displays.
