Vegetable Seeds to Sow Now - October Planting

Even though there’s not a hoard of seeds to sow this late in autumn, there are a few vegetable seeds to sow now, whether that be indoors or outdoors.

These will be specific to the variety, so make sure to double-check the sowing information before purchasing – just in case.

Broad bean seeds

Some broad beans are ideal for sowing from October to November. Broad bean Masterpiece Green, for example, is perfect to sow directly outside from October for an early crop the following year.

Pea seeds

Pea Meteor can be sown directly outside from October to November. Many pea seeds are often sown outside from February, but this variety is perfect for late autumn sowing.

Spinach

Perpetual Spinach is a hardy variety that is best for sowing outdoors from September to October or in spring from March to May. It can also be sown indoors from March to April or September to October.

Cauliflower All Year Round seeds

Cauliflower All Year Round is perfect for sowing in September and October. This variety is perfect for overwintering, as it's incredibly frost-hardy. As you can tell from its name, this variety of cauliflower can be grown in most planting seasons throughout the year, withstanding the harsh and unpredictable British weather.

Garlic seeds

Want to grow your own garlic from seed? Garlic seeds are best for sowing in late autumn, giving them a few months to grow decent bulbs before they’re ready to be harvested. Garlic needs periods of cold to thrive and produce a good crop, so they’re often sown in late autumn or winter.
